The purpose of Kappa Eta Kappa at The University of Chicago shall be to foster fraternal relations among STEM students; promote professional, academic, and ethical development; cultivate character and ideals of service; strengthen fellowship between students and faculty; and uphold the traditions and values of Kappa Eta Kappa.
Kappa Eta Kappa is one of the oldest professional STEM fraternities in the United States, bringing together students interested in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and related technical fields. Since its founding, KHK has focused on building strong academic and professional communities rooted in collaboration, growth, and service.
Kappa Eta Kappa was founded on February 10, 1923, at the University of Iowa by electrical engineering students who wanted a space to learn from one another beyond the classroom. Over the past century, the fraternity expanded nationally, became co-educational in 1981, and evolved alongside the changing STEM landscape while staying true to its original mission.
The Kappa Chapter at the University of Chicago continues this legacy by fostering a supportive, student-driven community across STEM disciplines. Our members come from diverse academic backgrounds but share a common interest in learning, building, and growing together, supported by a nationwide alumni network that provides mentorship and professional insight.
Technical Rigor
Kappa Eta Kappa is rooted in the pursuit of excellence across science, engineering, and applied technical fields. We value careful reasoning, strong fundamentals, and disciplined problem-solving, and we encourage members to approach technical challenges with curiosity, precision, and respect for evidence.
Collaborative Learning
Progress in STEM is built through shared knowledge. KHK emphasizes peer-driven learning, academic support, and open exchange of ideas across disciplines. Our members grow together by teaching, questioning, and supporting one another in both coursework and independent exploration.
Enduring Community
Kappa Eta Kappa is a long-term professional and academic community. We foster meaningful connections among students, faculty, and alumni that extend beyond college, supporting members as they develop as scientists, engineers, and professionals throughout their careers.
